Sycamore Canyon AcademyAt Sycamore Canyon Academy, our campus is built on the principles of respect, pride and learning. As your son walks along the sycamore-lined paths of the campus, he will see this behavior modeled by others. This is our culture, and these are our expectations.

The 20-acre campus offers a variety of program venues including accredited education, therapeutic services, community service and family involvement, plus a living positive environment guided by professionally trained staff. Wherever your son finds the inspiration to change his behavior, Sycamore staff will support him. We know the more opportunities we give him to succeed, the better he will do. Learning and self-development are best accessed through different approaches and Sycamore offers many:

Education. Students are engaged in accredited education lessons which are self-paced, flexible and relevant to the student's academic needs. The schedule is carefully constructed so students have optimum individualized academic instruction, and their basic skills are reinforced and improved through thematic lessons. Students are engaged in education classes at least 6.5 hours each day in middle school or high school coursework in English, History, Science and Mathematics. Along with traditional classroom instruction, an ecology curriculum focusing on the local Sonoran Desert environment and culture engages students in an experiential learning process.

Therapeutic Services. The services provided at Sycamore are guided by an assessment process which includes inventories, interviews of the student and family and a review of any school and personal records. Sycamore utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy as its therapeutic approach to changing troubled behavior. Sycamore Canyon Academy works with parents and professionals to develop a successful transition plan for all students as part of their aftercare planning. The student's daily schedule emphasizes activities of a cognitive academy model program which includes group meetings, campus norms and a student-supported culture. Students address substance abuse by participating in Pathways Alcohol and Drug Treatment programs. They may earn certification in First Aid and CPR as part of their training. Sycamore also teaches youth social skills like how to handle anger and provides moral, ethical and life skills training. These sessions help each student focus on resolution of problem situations, develop concern for others and understand personal rights and responsibilities.

Community. Sycamore Academy encourages its students to develop a cultural and historical understanding of how they fit into the community. The program supports community service and involvement philosophy through its collaboration with the Santa Catalina Mountain District, Oracle Park Service, Fire Departments and other agencies. Community service activities include:
  • Stewards for the Arizona Trail Association
  • Working with and caring for abused and abandoned animals at Equine Refuge
  • Refurbishing historical buildings with Oracle State Park
Family Involvement. Family involvement is important to a youth's success in the program. It is our experience that programs alone are not the force that changes youth - relationships change youth. Therefore, we work to repair, rebuild and enhance the communication between the student, his family and community. We also encourage the family's participation in treatment planning. We do everything possible to facilitate family involvement through on-site weekend visitation, video teleconferences, home passes, telephone calls and on-site parenting classes utilizing Active Parenting curriculum.
